It's amazing how many doctors are so quick to discount a patient's gut instincts, even when there is medical evidence to back it up. I've been taking thyroid medication for 3 years. My pharmacy switched me from Synthroid to generic and I started to have various problems that come and go - dizziness, itching, numbness, feeling sluggish, abdominal pain, muscle and joint aches. I asked if my thyroid condition or the med change could be the issue and was told no because my tsh was normal. I have been sent to a rheumotologist, dermatologist, osteopath and neurologist for these issues. No one found any solution. I asked all of them if my thyroid issue could be causing these problems, especially since they manifested after my hypothyroidism developed and everyone dismissed this as a possibility. And each specialist only wanted to approach the symptoms that related to his or her particular specialty instead of looking at the entire scope of my health issues. I finally grew frustrated and did my own research and made an appointment with an endocrinologist. She said that it is possible that these symptoms are due to my thyroid and has switched me back to Synthroid. Although the generic is the same medicine, some patients have a better response to some brands over others. If this doesn't help, she will prescribe a T-3 med (Synthroid only provides T-4), and the next option would be Armour. My endo did say if that doesn't help, non-thyroid issues will need to be considered, but I'm happy that this doctor is listening and has several treatment options. And if this doesn't help, at least I'll know it's not my thyroid.

I too have a thyroid condition, I had cancer of the thyroid. They removed my thyroid about 10 yrs ago and I have been fighting the battle of the buldge. Like you I am not able to find anyone to listen to me. I hear, change your diet~ so I change my diet. Do I loose weight, NO!!. What is the difference between Synthroid Medication and the Armour Thyroid Med? I think I will talk to my doctor about this. Going to the gym and working out only makes me tired, I have yet to loose weight but have only built up muscle in my arms and legs. How discouraging. I enjoyed your story.

I was so glad to read your story. I have almost every symptom of hypothyroidism and no doctor will listen to me. I have begged for the correct testing but they say that I dont need it. I am so tired all the time. I have put on about 75 pounds in the last year and a half. But by far my worst symptom is that I am so cold all the time. More clothing doesnt make it better. I usually have to take a hot bath to raise my body temperature. But my doctor says that I would be having female problems. Thats highly unlikely considering I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago. I really thought it was just in my mind but you have given me the push I need to not give up. I thank you and would appreciate any advise you have to give.

What is this Armour Thyroid Medication? Is it a prescription, or is it a naturopathic remedy? I have Hashimoto's syndrome now for a year, and in the past 2 years have gained 30 pounds. I am desperate to find something/someone to help me with the weight gain. I do find that if I dont eat any processed foods at all, no white sugar or flour, no red meat, that I have some weight come off. But the exhaustion level I am experiencing is keeping me from exercising (I have a very crazy schedule). Any other suggestions? I am in the Seattle area. Should I see an Endocrinologist and ask him if he knows about Armour Thyroid med?

I have the same exact issues you did, but I live in MI and have yet to be able to convince my GP to allow me to see an endocrinologist because they are so busy and only want to see patients who "have concrete symptomology". In other words if you don't have a disease that's clear cut, they won't bother with you. And its true what you say that womens health issues are all chalked up to eating too many doughnuts and sitting around watching soaps. I only eat like 950 cals a day (I am hypothyridic and have been on meds over two years) I excercise for an hour every day. I also cannot seem to loose weight. I bounce between 158-180 in the summer but can't seem to get back to my normal weight if im guessing around 130. My doc wont do anything about the meds because she claims im not taking adequate steps to 'help the medicine help me'...in otherwords she thinks im not working hard enough. I want to loose the weight for my fiance but he undersands its basically a no-win situation at this point (he sees how hard I work on it.) I've basically given up loosing weight and just try to think, at least im making my heart healthy...yay...

Hello Hellchick
I took a look at your blog today and found some interesting content there. I want to communicate with other suffers. I have an underactive thyroid and a website for other sufferers at http://www.thyroidtalk.com We also have an agreement with a producer of an excellent Thyroid audio and we are currently giving away an e-book on Hypothyroidism and menopause. If you'd like to tell people about this, then great. All the best, Sammi
